Marriage Minute December 9, 2018
Malachi 2:13-16 “And this second thing you do. You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. But you say, ‘Why does he not?’ Because the Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So, guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. “For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So, guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”
In v13-14, God is a witness, he sees how spouses treat one another. He knows if spouses are faithful. Sometimes it’s hard to love your wife, or hard to submit to your husband. Both the husband and wife must trust God in their marriage, not to quit, or desire someone else than the one whom the Lord provided for them.
We see in V 15 That God declares them one. The covenant binds a husband and wife together for life. Married couples are bound together by their oath and by God’s Spirit.
Verse 16, shows that marital unfaithfulness is a horrible and violent act against God, your spouse, your children, your extended family, your church and your community.
Prayer: Lord, strengthen our resolve to encourage faithfulness in each other and others and to see the sin of faithless, lack of love that leads to divorce as God sees it.
