Marriage Minute 2-17-2019

                                           “I don’t love you anymore.”

What does this phrase really mean…“I don’t love you anymore”? There are three different types of love that married people experience; for a marriage to last, each partner must hold to #3.

  1. Friendship or companionship love – Phileo: This love is based relational feelings.  This type of love is a strong affection between friends or compatriots.  A love that is a mutual obligated love because of a contractual relationship.  (Hebrews 13:1 )
  2. Passion, physical love – Eros: This kind of love is a physical attraction that can be good in the right context. Yet often it’s a passion that is built upon self-desire and more about physical attraction and in the wrong context can be merely lust or infatuation.  (see the Old Testament example in 2 Samuel 13:15)
  3. Devoted or sacrificial love – Agape:  with this type of love a person seeks to serve the other person, and doing wat is best for them.  Agape love is sacrificial, it’s the example Jesus showed us (1 John 4:19). It’s the type of love that will endure in both good and bad times.

Someone that says, “I don’t love you anymore” might have built their relationship only on Phileo or maybe Eros love, but not Agape love.

A marriage that ends in divorce, either 1 or both persons lost their Agape love  (Revelation 2:4). That marriage needs the love found in 1 Corinthians 13, a love lasts, it never fails, it never quits.

Spouses Prayer: Father, You have Agape loved us, create in us a desire to give Agape love for each other.
